Educational Experiences
Students will learn more about the Civil War era by visiting Maplewood. Greeted on the front portico by the owner, your classes will get to tour the entire downstairs of a pre-Civil War home listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. As the tour enfolds throughout each room, interesting true stories about Civil War events and daily life during the 1800’s will be enthusiastically shared with your students. The living room has distinctive, pastoral murals painted on the wainscoting that are the only documented work of its kind in Tennessee and even perhaps the Southeast. Each room possesses unique stories and furnishings sure to peak the interest of your students.

There are four different stations for the students to experience while at Maplewood. While one group is enjoying the house tour, the other three groups will be participating/observing other activities of the 1800’s such as lawn games (rainy weather will not affect activities), quill pen writing, and music/woodworking. Each rotation lasts approximately twenty minutes, and an old-fashioned bell ringing will signal the time to change stations.

Once the students have visited all of the stations, they could enjoy a visit to quaint downtown historic Lynchburg with its many delightful shops. Maplewood is located just 1.5 miles from the downtown area. Wiseman Park, located adjacent to the square, is an ideal spot for a picnic lunch. To reserve the large pavilion, a charge of $20 is required. For your convenience, we will gladly handle the booking of the pavilion should you so desire. Lunch options include bringing your own sack lunches or ordering in advance from local establisments, such as pizza from the BBQ Caboose (menus can be provided upon request).

- Should you desire, an educational comprehension quiz will be provided for your follow-up evaluation.

- Mary Lavender Money has been a certified school teacher for over twenty-five years. She has taught Tennessee and American history to elementary, junior high, and high school students.

- The field trip to Maplewood will be a well-organized, educational, and fun experience. Rainy weather will not affect the activities. There is ample parking for school buses.
