HISTORY OF OUR HOME
The house was built in 1858 by Townsend Port Green, a wealthy landowner who operated a prosperous lumber business. One of his sons, Lieutenant William (Billy) Green, was killed while on furlough by Union soldiers on the family’s property. The Civil War wrecked Townsend Green’s fortunes. Between 1885 and his death in 1886, the farm and house was purchased by Daniel Evans, a whiskey distiller and saloon owner. He rode a large yellow horse back and forth to work in town. There were six Evans’ children (One child died in infancy.).

The children enjoyed swimming in the Mulberry Creek located across the road from the house. Two daughters, Mary and Ophelia would later marry prominent men of the community. Mary became Mrs. Jack Bobo and ran the still prospering Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House in Lynchburg. Ophelia became Mrs. Lem Motlow, the proprietor of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery.

Daniel Evans died at only thirty-nine years of age. His wife, Susan Birdie Parks Evans, managed the farm where corn, wheat, rye, and oats were raised. The family owned a buggy as well as a two-seated surrey. Hogs and milk cows provided milk, butter, and meat for the family. The original smokehouse still exists on the property today. The family had a large garden that provided their other food needs.

A pump provided water and a trough with cold water kept the milk cold. Around 1900, a larger kitchen and inside bathroom off the then back porch were added to the home. As the years passed, the house was neglected and fell in an unfortunate state of disrepair. In the early 1990’s, the house was purchased and completely preserved and restored to its original beauty by Ester and John Hudgens. In 2004, the Moneys became the proud owners of the home and today joyfully open it to provide elegance and period charm for their guests.
